Service Learning Requirements

All students in Cecil County must complete a graduation requirement in service learning. The requirement will be met by successful completion of infused service learning units in grades 6 through 9, or a service learning course in grades 10, 11, or 12. Transfer students entering grades 6, 7, 8, or 9 will be required to complete the subsequent units upon enrollment in the Cecil County Public Schools (e.g., a student who transferred into the Cecil County Public Schools in grade 7 would be required to satisfactorily complete the service learning units in grades 7, 8 and 9 to meet the graduation requirement).

Transfer students entering Grades 10 through 12 need to meet one of the following:
1) proof of previous satisfactory service learning; or
2) satisfactory completion of the service learning course; or
3) satisfactory completion of an approved service learning project co-planned by the student and
the building level Service Learning Coordinator.

The projects all address the Seven Best Practices of Service Learning, which are as follows:
1. Meet a recognized need in the community
2. Achieve curricular objectives through service-learning
3. Reflect throughout the service-learning experience
4. Develop student responsibility
5. Establish community partnerships
6. Plan ahead for service-learning
7. Equip students with knowledge and skills needed for service

The students at Bohemia Manor High School complete their 9th grade service learning project addressing "Issues in Society" while in
Health I class. Depending upon when the student has health will determine when they complete their project. The plan for the 2016-2017 school year is to have all the classes cover the topic of domestic violence. First marking period students spent three weeks on various aspects of violence prevention and created their own poster to be submitted into the county's annual Step Up!Against Bullying Poster contest. The remaining classes may be covering the same topic or something different.

Students are encouraged to earn meritorious service hours in their communities upon completion of the graduation requirement. A list of organizations that need volunteers is available in guidance. The form to receive meritorious hours is below or a hard copy can be picked up outside of Mrs. Wilcox's office in Guidance. Students can turn in the completed Service Learning Validation Form to the guidance office.
